About
Daniel Slattery is a paralegal and DUI/Traffic Crash Consultant at the firm, bringing a rare combination of law enforcement, forensic, and courtroom expertise to the team. A retired Nevada State Trooper, he specializes in drug and alcohol impairment cases and supports both plaintiff and defense teams in civil and criminal matters. Mr. Slattery serves as the firm's in-house expert on impairment science, translating field-level police training and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) certification into case strategy, negotiation leverage, and trial preparation.
He has reviewed over 215 DUI case reports and advised nine local law offices on the finer points of impairment evidence, and he is a certified DRE Instructor who has conducted 78 drug influence evaluations with a 95% accuracy rating. With his unique vantage point from two decades on the enforcement side of impaired-driving cases, he gives the firm's attorneys insight into how officers build a case, and how that case can be challenged.
Experience
Law Enforcement
Mr. Slattery served with the Nevada Highway Patrol's Traffic Enforcement Division and previously as a police officer in the Town of Mills, Wyoming, arresting more than 820 impaired drivers between 2004 and 2021. He was a member of the instructor cadre that trained 100% of NHP Troopers in ARIDE, making NHP the tenth agency in the U.S. to reach that milestone. During the 2017 Las Vegas Massacre, he shut down northbound I-15 to clear a path for victims and first responders and separately received a Life Saving Medal for pulling an injured driver from a burning vehicle amid exploding ammunition. He also received the NHP Meritorious Service Medal, the Outstanding Officer Performance award, and multiple MADD and Wyoming Governor's awards for impaired-driving enforcement.
Drug Recognition & Instruction
Certified as a Drug Recognition Expert in 2007 and a DRE Instructor since 2009, Mr. Slattery has taught DRE, ARIDE, and SFST courses to law enforcement agencies across Nevada, Wyoming, and Colorado, along with guest lectures for schools, nonprofits, and private organizations. He holds Practitioner Lecturer authorization in Wyoming to instruct Firearms, DWUI Enforcement, Traffic Stops, and Drug Impairment.
Expert Witness & Litigation Support
Mr. Slattery has provided expert and non-expert testimony in numerous Nevada and Wyoming courts on subjects including cannabis impairment, CNS stimulants, and DUI investigations, including Daubert hearings. In recent DUI defense matters, his consulting work has contributed to case outcomes including trial dismissals, reduced charges, and stays of adjudication.
Military Service
Mr. Slattery attained the rank of Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, serving with the Marine Barracks 8th and I Presidential Guard Detachment in Washington, D.C., and 1st Battalion 4th Marines, among other assignments. He received two commendations for leadership and organizational skills.
